Prathamashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha or dark fortnight in the month of Margasir. Goddess Shashthi Devi is worshiped on this occasion.

Prathamastami Tradition

The maternal uncles, who are called 'Ashtami bandhu', offer them new clothes along with sweets and delicacies. Families, especially mothers, pray for the good health and long life of the eldest son or daughter as it is believed that the first child becomes the flag bearer of responsibilities in the family after the death of the parents.

Prathamashtami is also known as Saubhagini Ashtami. On this day, farmers worship Goddess Saubhagya with children to thank her for her blessings and abundant crop production. Moreover, Prathamashtami was also called Kaal Bhairavastami because of the now extinct practice of praying to Bhairav ​​to get rid of bad karma.

Prathamastami at Lingaraja Temple

It is said that Lord Lingaraja visits his maternal uncle's house at Kapali Math on this day. The presiding deities of this monastery are Lord Baruneshwara and Goddess Banadevi, the maternal uncle and aunt of Lord Lingaraja. It is said that by drinking the water of Papanasini pond in the premises of this monastery one gets salvation from the sins of the devotees.

Prathamastami Cuisine Enduri Pitha

           On the occasion of Prathamashtami, special enduri peetha is made at this time of the year in every household. Made with a stuffing of chhena (cheese), jaggery and grated coconut, this is the only Odia dish prepared using turmeric leaves.

       A pot (called athara handi) whose mouth is tied with a cloth, is placed on the stove, on which is filled with chenna, jaggery and grated coconut in an elongated shape slurry in turmeric leaves. It is well covered in steam and gets cooked before serving. Enduri Peetha is characterized by the quintessential aroma emanating from the use of turmeric leaves.
