Mythology behind Manabasa Gurubara

There is a very moral story behind this brata, which gives a very important social message. This total story of this brata is based on a book named Laxmi Purana.

According to this book, Goddess Laxmi visited the nearest villages which are around Srimandira Puri with the permission of her husband and brother-in-law. On every Thurs day of Margasira Month, she visited the nearest area to see how her devotees treat her on that day. When she reached she was about to know that no general people treated her as per the rule but at the same time a scheduled tribe woman (chandaluni)  named Sriya was ready to welcome her as per the rituals.

Goddess Laxmi happily visited her house and blessed her with wealth, a palace, and kids. At the same time, her husband God Jagannath, and brother-in-law God Balabhadra visited the forest and saw Mata Laxmi inside the house of a Chandaluni as at that time the people were treated as untouched.

They the two brothers decided to remove Goddess Laxmi from Sree Mandira and they also do so. But at the time when Goddess Laxmi left Sree Mandira, she cursed that you people will not get any food and water for 12 years. When I whom you called chandaluni will give food to you people only then you will be able to eat.

After this, Lakshmi Ji left the temple and started living by building a royal palace near the sea. Due to Lakshmi ji's curse, both brothers did not get any food and water, both of them even had to beg.

In the end, after suffering a lot, both people reached the palace of Lakshmi Ji, for begging. Lakshmi Ji recognized them and give them good clothes to wear and food to eat.

Both the brothers had understood their mistake, both of them were very sorry and went to Lakshmi ji and prayed for forgiveness and everyone happily returned to Shri Mandir.
