Kartika Brata In Odisha / Katika Purnima / Panchuka

The people of Odisha are very God believers, and in Odisha, 13 fasts are observed in 12 months. The month of Kartik is considered a very holy month in Odisha. In this month people keep Kartik fast for the whole month.

Morning worship in the month of Kartik

In this month, most of the women wake up very early in the morning. They wake up at 4:00 in the morning, then people after completing their morning routine sit down for worship. In the village of Orissa, women gather near the pond and worship.

Gods worshiped in Kartika brat

The idol of Radha and Krishna is worshiped in Kartik Vrat. This is also called Rai Damodar Puja. Rai means Radha and Damodar means Krishna.

The people of Odisha eat meat throughout the year, but in the month of Kartik, most people are completely vegetarian.

Worship of Tulsi in the month of Kartik


 Worship of Tulsi is done daily in Odisha, but in this month some independent worship is done near Tulsi ji. Rangoli is made near Tulsi ji, in this rangoli the figure of Lord ji is like Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra ji. Along with this, different types of flower designs are made, which is called Muruj in the local language.

Evening worship in the month of Kartik

In the evening worship, people circumambulate the temple, together with Hindu religious texts such as Bhagbat, Ramayana, all these are read in the temple. People gather and listen to all this.

Panchuka Brata In Kartika Month 

Panchuk is called on the last five days of the month of Kartik. Those who cannot keep Kartik fast for the whole month, they believe in it for the last 5 days. In these 5 days, people go to the nearby temple to have darshan, along with they do pure food. These 5 days people eat pure vegetarian food.

Kartika Purnima/Ras Purnima

The last day of the month of Kartik is called Kartik Purnima. Most of the people fast on this day, together they go to the temple to worship and those who do not keep fast o people eat pure vegetarian food. This full moon is also called Ras Purnima. After this day the Kartik fast which has lasted for the whole month ends.

Kartika Punima Traditions

Boat Sailing in Kartika Purnima

In Kartika Purnima, there is a ritual celebrated known as boat sailing.
Lond time ago odia businessmen went to the islands like Java and Sumatra for business on the boat. To remember this the boat sailing is celebrated on this day.

People get up early in the morning and go to a nearby river or pond with their eco-friendly boat which is made up of  Banana stems. Then they lighten the candle inside the boat and sale it in the water reciting a local song

Also, a fair was arranged on the river shore of Mahanadi river  Cuttack Odisha Named Bali yatra to remember the odia traditions and business. People come throughout the country to join this fair and show and sell their products.

In the month of Kartik, Brahmin widow women go away from home on any religion and spend a whole month and people spend full time in worship.

In this month, Brahmin Bidhaba women keep fast, for the whole month, women eat only once, which is called Habish, the rest of the time women spend much of their time in worship.

Habisarna

Garlic, onion, potato, tomato etc. are not used in the food that is prepared in the whole month. It is called Habisann.

Habish Dalma

A vegetable is made with Habisanna, which is called Habish Dalma. This Dalma is made by adding some independent types of vegetables to the dal like raw banana, arbi etc.

Chhadakhai 

The days after Kartik Purnima are considered to be the first day of Margashirsha month, because on this day all the restrictions on people's eating and drinking are removed. Just like those who wish to eat those people who are restricted to eat once a day and those who do not want to eat all these things are not there. That is why it is called Chhadkhai meaning leaving food.

 But slowly this thing has started going wrong, as people have started believing it, nowadays this day is for eating Amish. So many animals are cut and eaten on this day. People believe on this day that it is right to eat Amish on this day which is a wrong thing.
