Sathi Osha is a traditional festival of Odisha. It is celebrated in Bhadrav month, two days after Ganesh Charthurti.

According to Tithi (Hindu Calender), Sathi Osha is observed in the waxing moon period(Sukla Pakhya) of Bhadrav month, 6 days after Bhadrav Amavasya and 2 days after Ganesh Chaturthi.
In 2023 Sathi Osha is on 21st September.


WHY Sathi Osha CELEBRATED

According to odia rituals, Sathi Devi/Sathi Dusei is the Goddess of children. So mothers' worshiped Sathi mata for the welfare ness of their children.
Also, Sathi puja occurs after the birth of a newborn baby. After the birth of a newborn baby, on the 6th-day family members worshiped Sathi mata to save their child from all types of hurdles in life.

Sathi Osha Puja Bidhi

Like other Oshas in Sathi Osha preparation starts one day before, in Odisha.

Pre preparation

One day before the Sathi Puja the houses cleaned very well. Also cleans the Curry stone(Sila-Pua)because to make the goddess idol on it.

On the Puja Day

The ladies take a holy bath very early in the morning, then they make idols of goddesses on curry stone. They make a human-like structure on the sila and a baby-like structure on pua with the help of turmeric paste. The body parts are made up of clamshell (kaudi). Some may use silver eye structures and imitation jewelry on Goddesses.
Then they decorated the goddess with 6 types of flowers and some types of Shrubs and herbs like Bajramuli, Colocasia, Balunga are compulsory for this puja.

Then they offered dhup, dipa, and fruits as prasad.
After offerings fruits then they prepared the foods/Prasad/bhog, which contains rice, mix vegetable curry, mix bhaja(vegetables stir-fried), Chakuli Pitha(rice pancake), etc.
They offered all things to the Goddess and recites the Sathi Osha folk song. Then morning Puja completed.

Evening Rituals/Puja Ujappana

In the evening time after offering Dhupa and Dipa to Goddess ladies completed the puja. Then they arranged all things and keep all the puja samagri in a pot to drowning it in water bodies in next day morning.
There are peculiar rituals also there. In the evening mothers gently beat their children with the shrub named brajamuli which is used in the puja. It is believed that children's bodies become hard like Bajra(According to Hindu Mythology bajra is the hardest weapon used by God Indra.)after being beat with Bajramuli.

Sathi Osha Food/Prasa

Sathi means six. So in this puja what is offered to the Goddess are six in numbers.

So in this puja, six types of curry and six types of bhaja may be offered as prasad. Also, six types of flowers are offered to the Goddess.

But generally, ladies make mixed vegetables curry with six types of vegetables and the Mix Bhaja also contains six types of vegetables.

  2. Mix curry with six types of vegetables
  3. Mix bhaja with six types of vegetables
  4. Rice pan cake(chakuli pitha)
  5. Fruits like banana, apple, coconut, etc.
