Mahalaya Sradha is known as Pitru Pakhya Sradha in North India and in the local language of Odisha, is also known as Handi Sradha. Some places it also called Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

Mahalaya Amavasya is on the Aswina Amavasya. After Purnima the pitru pakhya starts and it continues upto the Amavasya about 14 days.
After Purnima, you can give sraddha to your ancestors up to the Amavasya. On the Mahalaya Amavasya that's 14th October, Pitru Pakhya ends.
Why Mahalaya Amavasya Celebrated
Mahalaya Amavasya is the day on which people give pinda or tarpan to their ancestors. Normally this starts from one day after the Vadrav Purnima up to the Mahalaya Amavasya. This time is called pitru pakhya and during this 15 days period, people give Tarpana/Pinda to their ancestors as per their convince.
Mahalaya Amavasya - Legend
As Hindus believed in rebirth, so to give peace to the soul of ancestors, people give tarpan/pinda on pitru pakhya. It is believed that during the days of Pitru Paksha, Yamrat, the god of death, frees the souls of the ancestors. So that they can go to the place of their families and take tarpan. This is also called Sradha.
As per odia rituals, on this pitru pakhya people invited their ancestors to their home and on Deepavali Amavasya, they said goodbye to them which is called Bada-Badia-Teka in the local language.
So the Ancestors stay with the family for one month. So during this period, there are special arrangements like You have to always wear clean clothes when you prepared your daily food because the food offered to the ancestors every day. Also, every time you entered the kitchen, you have to wear clothes on which you don't have your food. It continues throughout the month.

In Odisha, it is also called Saptapurusi Sradh because in this period people give sradh to their 7 generation ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya Puja Bidhi
Pre-preparation
The pre-preparation starts before 14 days because before these rituals the total things of the house including the house should be cleaned neatly.
Wel come to the Ancestors
Before one day of the Sradh, people welcomed their ancestors late at night by giving Pan and Betel Nut.
Pinda/Sradh/Tarpan
On the Sradha day, people called the priest and give pinda to the ancestors by reciting mantras by the priest. With washed raw rice (Arua Chaula) people give this pinda filling their palm. They give it seven times as it is Sapta Purushi Sradh.
Chancha
Then they give rice, pulses, and vegetables to the priest which is called Chancha for Brahman Bhojan.

Afternoon Puja
Odia Laddies keep fast up to the afternoon puja completed. They prepared the food for afternoon pooja which was also offered to the ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya Food/Prasad
Different types of food were prepared on the Sradh day and offered to the ancestors. All the foods are veg and prepared without onion and garlic.
The main food which prepared on this day are
- Raw rice/Arua Bhata.
- Mix Veg Curry / Ghanta Tarkari.
- Khiri.
- Kakara Pitha.
These all food prepared and offered to the ancestors. Then these foods were also distributed to the neighbors.
