"Jahni Osha" or "Kumar Purnima" is a traditional Osha of Odisha celebrated in the month of Ashwina.

The people of Odisha celebrate many festivals throughout the year, Jahni Osha is one of them. This worship takes place in the month of Ashwin(September-October).

JAHNI OSHA 2023

In 2022 Jahni Osha Starts from 30 September and ends on 28 October as the pooja continues throughout the month of Ashwina. 29 September and 09 October both are full moon days. The pooja starts from the next day of full moon day and ends on a full moon day, which is one month (Ashwin) according to the Hindu calendar. The pooja continues between two full moon Days.

HOW JAHNI OSHA CELEBRATED/JAHNI OSHA PUJA BIDHI

  1. Jahni Osha For unmarried Girls'
  2. Jahni Osha is mostly celebrated by unmarried girls. In this pooja, they worship maa Brundabati/Tulasi. (In Hindu mythology Goddess Tulsi is a very favorite of lord Vishnu than wife Laxmi.) This puja occurs in the evening time of the day. The unmarried Girls' gathered near the Tulsi chaura. They decorated the chaura with rangoli colors and with flowers. Ridge guard flower (Jahni fula) is the main offering of this Osha. Besides this, they offered seasonal fruits like custard apple, cucumber, guava, etc. Then they recite the jahni osha Gita, offered dhupa, dipa, and prasad to the Goddess Tulasi. And then this puja ends for that day. This process continues throughout the month. On the last day, they end their pooja known as Kumar Purnima.

    Girls keeping this brata don't eat nonveg and ridge guard throughout the month. It's an old belief that if the girl keeping this brata then she will get a handsome and good husband. So it is called Kumar Purnima means Kumaris pray for their kumaras to Goddess Brundabati.

  3. Jahni Osha for a newly married lady.

In some parts of Odisha, there is a ritual of KUMAR PURNIMA BHARA. Parents of a daughter send Bhara to their daughter's in-laws house which includes fruits, sweets, new clothes to celebrate this festival.

JAHNI OSHA AS AN  AGRICULTURAL FESTIVAL

Like the other festivals of Odisha, Jahni osha also is an agriculture-based festival. The important thing for this puja is jahni fula. So this is the season when the vegetable is cultivated. Also, another thing that this pooja occurs in the evening as Odisha is an agricultural state so in the morning time farmers and their families mostly the lady gets busy in their field, as this is the season of paddy cultivation. So in the evening time, they have the time to arrange pooja for their kids. besides this, the jahni fula(ridge guard flower) also bloom in the evening time which is very bright in color. 

KUMAR PURNIMA

The last day of Jahni osha is celebrated as Kumar Purnima. On this day girls ends their brata which continued throughout the month. This day is very special to them. 

Morning Pooja 

In the morning time girls after taking their bath wear new clothes go to the pooja place which is a Tulasi Chaura. There they worshiped the sun. Then there they make a moon on a plate with lia, milk, banana and with different kinds of fruits.

Khai Anjuli :

There also ritual occurs known as Khai Anjuli. Girls take Khai. Gua, and different types of flowers and fruits in their palm and offers it to God Son and borrow in their mind that to give them a handsome husband.

Evening Puja

Then they keep fast for the whole day. In the evening time, they gathered near the Tulasi chaura once again. They have bara, kakara, chakuli, arisa pitha (different kinds of cake of Odisha) with them for prasad to offer. Then when the full moon show in the sky, they started worshiping the moon. After that, they go to the village pond to drowning all kinds of pooja samagri and also the moon they make in the morning.  Then they break their brata and eat prasad and pitha. Pooja ends.
