The people of Odisha celebrate many festivals throughout the year, Jahni Osha is one of them. This worship takes place in the month of Ashwin(September-October).
In 2022 Jahni Osha Starts from 30 September and ends on 28 October as the pooja continues throughout the month of Ashwina. 29 September and 09 October both are full moon days. The pooja starts from the next day of full moon day and ends on a full moon day, which is one month (Ashwin) according to the Hindu calendar. The pooja continues between two full moon Days.
Jahni Osha is mostly celebrated by unmarried girls. In this pooja, they worship maa Brundabati/Tulasi. (In Hindu mythology Goddess Tulsi is a very favorite of lord Vishnu than wife Laxmi.) This puja occurs in the evening time of the day. The unmarried Girls' gathered near the Tulsi chaura. They decorated the chaura with rangoli colors and with flowers. Ridge guard flower (Jahni fula) is the main offering of this Osha. Besides this, they offered seasonal fruits like custard apple, cucumber, guava, etc. Then they recite the jahni osha Gita, offered dhupa, dipa, and prasad to the Goddess Tulasi. And then this puja ends for that day. This process continues throughout the month. On the last day, they end their pooja known as Kumar Purnima.
Girls keeping this brata don't eat nonveg and ridge guard throughout the month. It's an old belief that if the girl keeping this brata then she will get a handsome and good husband. So it is called Kumar Purnima means Kumaris pray for their kumaras to Goddess Brundabati.
Like the other festivals of Odisha, Jahni osha also is an agriculture-based festival. The important thing for this puja is jahni fula. So this is the season when the vegetable is cultivated. Also, another thing that this pooja occurs in the evening as Odisha is an agricultural state so in the morning time farmers and their families mostly the lady gets busy in their field, as this is the season of paddy cultivation. So in the evening time, they have the time to arrange pooja for their kids. besides this, the jahni fula(ridge guard flower) also bloom in the evening time which is very bright in color.
The last day of Jahni osha is celebrated as Kumar Purnima. On this day girls ends their brata which continued throughout the month. This day is very special to them.
