Chitau Amavasya or chitalagi Amavasya is a traditional festival of Odisha celebrated in the month of Sraban.
Odisha is a state of festivals. So many festivals are celebrated in this state. Chitau amabasya celebrated in the month of Sraban. The Sraban amabasya known as chitau amabasya/ chitalagi amabasya.
Most festivals are celebrated according to Prabhu Jagannath in Odisha. People from all over the world celebrated Jagannath Sanskrit. So Chitau Amavasya or Chitalagi Amavasya is mainly a farming-related festival and also celebrated in Srimandira.

Chitalagi Amavasya in Sreemandira
Sraban Amavasya is known as Chitau Amavasya . In Sree Mandira it is celebrated as Chitalagi Amabasya. This day is a very auspicious day to Prey God Vishnu. In this month if you pray to Lord Vishnu then you will be free from rebirth, which is believed by people. Chitalagi to Lord Jagannath occurs this day in Sree Mandira. Prabhu Jagannath, Balabhadra and maa Subhadra wear Chita on their forehead made up of gold.
Usually, Trimurti(Jagannath, Balavadra, and Subhadra) wear this Chita throughout the year. But on Snana Purnima which usually comes in the month of June, on this day the Chita is deposited in the storeroom of Sree Mandira. Then after Rathayatra and Bahuda, when Trimurti returned to their own place and situated on Ratnasinghasana, then on this day they wear the chita once again, known as Chitalagi Amavasya.
Chitau Amabasya as a agricaltural Festival
Chitau Amabasya is also celebrated all over Odisha mostly in the rural area. Chitau Pitha is the star Dish of this festival. Odisha is an agricultural-based state. Most of the people depend on agriculture for earning their live hood. So most of the festivals celebrated here are also agriculture-oriented. Chitau Amabasya is one among them. In this season mostly paddy is cultivated in Odisha. So farmers go to the cultivated field with chitau pitha among with all puja samagri mostly flower, Sandal pest, sindura, and dipa. There he worships the field for good cultivation and also for harvesting.
How Chitau Amabasya celebrated in central Odisha.
Chitau Amabasya is celebrated in central Odisha also. On this day ladies of the family takes a holy bath in the morning. Then they prepared Chitau Pitha and Khiri. This was offered to the village Goddess.
In the farmer's family, they prepared Chitau Pitha and Khiri and the elder person of the family(normally male) wear dhoti and gamuchha and go the field taking chitau pitha and all other puja required things with him. Then there he worships the cultivated field like a God and prays to give good cultivation. Then he buried the chitau pitha inside the field.

Chitau Amavasya is celebrated in west Odisha like other parts of Odisha. Besides all these a peculiar thing happened there. Mostly In Sambalpur people fed Chitau Pitha to the aquatic animals like snails, frogs to save their children from them. They usually go to the village pond or river nearby with their children. They offered the chitau pitha to the animals by their children.
